Cost of living: Bangkok vs Sydney

How rent, food, transport and healthcare compare for Australians moving to Bangkok.

🇺🇸 For Americans

Americans: the same savings usually apply against big US cities. Remember you must still file US taxes from abroad.

Rent

Rent is usually the biggest saving. A modern one-bedroom condo near the BTS in Sukhumvit or Ari often rents for ฿18,000–฿35,000 a month. A similar apartment in inner Sydney typically costs several times that. Family homes and serviced apartments cost more, but the gap is still large.

Food and groceries

Local food is very cheap: a street-food meal costs a few dollars. Imported goods such as cheese, wine and Australian brands can cost the same as at home or more, so your grocery bill depends on how 'local' you eat.

Transport

A BTS or MRT trip usually costs less than a Sydney Opal fare, and Grab rides are cheap. Many expats in central Bangkok live comfortably without a car.

Healthcare and schooling

Private hospital visits cost less than in Australia, but you need private international insurance because Medicare doesn't cover you. International school fees are the big expense for families and can match or exceed private schools in Sydney.

The bottom line

Many singles and couples find their monthly costs drop noticeably, mostly thanks to rent and transport. Build your own budget using current prices, since exchange rates and costs change.
