Banking & living costs

Everyday expenses, opening a Thai account, transfers and your first-month budget.

🇺🇸 For Americans

US citizens remain subject to US tax filing (and FBAR/FATCA reporting on foreign accounts). Speak with an expat-specialist tax adviser.

Opening an account

Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn (KBank) and SCB are popular with foreigners. Banks usually ask for your passport, a long-stay visa and proof of address; some branches also request a letter from an employer or embassy.

Moving money

Services like Wise often beat bank wire rates. Keep records of foreign transfers — you may need them for visa financial proofs or property purchases (Foreign Exchange Transaction Form).

First-month budget

Allow for two months' rent deposit plus one month in advance, utilities set-up, a SIM card, furnishings and transport. A comfortable single budget in central Bangkok is often ฿50,000–฿90,000 per month including rent.
